Offline and storage
NoteStand is designed to work without a connection, in rehearsal and in concert, where the network is often missing.
What works offline
- A local space works entirely offline: everything is on the device.
- A shared space is kept on each of your devices, documents included: you can view it, run it and edit it (if you are a manager) without a network. Your changes are saved on the device and sync automatically when the connection is back.
- Recorded instruments for interactive scores, once downloaded, stay available offline. Synthesised sound never needs the network.
For everything to be available offline, open the space at least once with a connection, so that its content is downloaded.
When the connection is missing
- An “Offline” chip shows at the top of the screen. You can keep working.
- Actions that need the network are disabled and say “Needs a connection”: inviting a member, renaming a shared space, announcing a concert by e-mail, publishing an online page, managing the subscription…
- A document not yet downloaded shows: “This document isn’t on this device yet. It will show once the connection is back.”
- A shared space never opened on this device is marked “Unavailable offline” in the list of spaces.
The “Account” menu also shows the connection state (“Online” or offline).
Protecting your data on the device
In a browser, NoteStand saves your data in the browser’s storage. Some browsers may erase this data when the device runs short of space. To prevent that:
- Open “Settings” › “Storage”.
- If the page says “Storage not persistent”, tap “Enable”. It then says “Persistent storage enabled”: the browser will no longer erase your data automatically.
The page also shows the space used.
Other precautions:
- Install NoteStand as an app (see Getting started): it is the safest way to keep your data.
- Export your local spaces regularly to a
.notestandfile (see Backing up and restoring a space). A local space has no other backup. - If the device runs short of space, NoteStand shows “Last save failed”: free up some space, then export your repertoire to be safe.
Updating NoteStand
In a browser, or installed from the browser, NoteStand updates itself when a connection is available. The iOS and Android apps update through their app store. A banner at the top of the screen may announce important information, for example planned maintenance.
